Shampoo

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew

a right spirit within me.

Psalm 51:10

Today’s post will be about how to find the right shampoo for your hair. It is very important to get a shampoo that will help keep your style, cleanse your hair, and that will help ensure a good, soft feeling that is perfect for styling!

When you go shopping for shampoo, one of the first things you should do is turn it over and start reading the ingredients. Look for any word that has “ethyl” in it. Why? You guessed it…this means alcohol! While it is difficult to find a product that is completely alcohol free, you can find them with a low content.

If a shampoo has “two alcohols” then I would have no problem recommending it to a customer. Another note about alcohol in shampoo or conditioner is the placement of the word in the list of ingredients. The closer it is to the top, the more of the ingredient there is. So, if you find the alcohol listed close to the end, it is usually not a main ingredient. When you see “ethyl” listed six or seven times….well, I would not recommend it for prolonged periods of time.

Now, let’s talk about specific shampoos.

Working as a stylist at Supercuts, I was able to use a variety of products. These recommendations are based only on my own experience. As with any subject, other people might have had a different experience….so, keep in mind this information is based solely on my own.

I personally like to rotate two or three shampoos. Your hair can build up a resistance to a shampoo that is used over and over, so it is a good idea to keep variety. You should have a good cleansing shampoo, a good moisturizing shampoo and shampoo that is specific to your hairtype.

What kind of hair do you have?

In the hair world, we put hair in different categories. Fine, Medium or Coarse, straight, curly, and wavy are just a few of the terms we use and many times they are used together. For instance, my hair is fine in texture and full in density (meaning I have a lot of it). It is also naturally wavy, and with use of the right product I can coax it into a decent curl.

I use Paul Mitchell Shampoo One (because I have had a chemical service done on my hair - highlights) when I want a cleansing shampoo. The rest of the time I use Back to Basics Jasmine shampoo for curly hair along with their styling moose.

For a shampoo specific to your hair, there are so many options I would have to write a book and personally interview each of you to cover them all!

Basically, I recommend Back to Basics, Paul Mitchell, and Redken products.

All of these are good product lines that are not harsh on your hair.

I have placed links to these products to help you find what you are looking for. Please let me know if you have any specific questions!

How to find a hair style that is right for you

Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. 1 Peter 3:3-4

Today, I am going to begin talking about how to find a hairstyle.
One key thing in finding the hairstyle that works for you is discovering the answer to some important questions. When I have a customer who is wanting a “new do” or “different look” these are a few of the questions that I ask to help us figure out what they are looking for.

How much time are you willing to spend or have to spend doing your hair?

For many people, mothers especially, schedules can be very limited in the amount of time allotted to spend on hair styling. If this is the case for you, you need to consider what I call a “blow & go” or “low maintenance” style.

What do you not want your hair to look like?

Some people think this is an odd question, thinking that I should ask what you want your hair to do. It is easier to eliminate things and narrow down our options by discovering what not to do.

How much product will you use in your hair?

This is another important question to answer when looking for your hairstyle. Some styles require a lot of product to keep their look. If you don’t have the time or the money to invest in using product it is wise to steer clear of styles that will require excessive product. It can get expensive!

What kind of lifestyle/job do you have?

Knowing the kind of environment where you spend most of your time is essential to any stylist helping her client choose a hairstyle. Some cuts are trendier, while others are more classic and business like. This will be helpful in figuring out a style that works for you.

With answers to these questions we can now move on to options for your hair.
This is where we talk about what you do like. Thus, we have another set of questions!

Do you like it long, short, or medium length?

Do you like to wear it straight or curly?

Do you prefer to have it hanging or pulled back from your face?

Other important facts about your hair

These questions are a great start to help you figure out what to tell the stylist in your life what you are looking for! There are many other factors as well…but I don’t want to put too much out for the first post. Check back soon to see what other interesting tid-bits are here!

If you want some ideas regarding a “new look” here is a great place to go that lets you upload your own picture and see what you would look like if you did get a certain hairstyle!
